Meet your Birdwatching Guide
Somboon Sundod
Birding enthusiast with decades of experience organizing custom birdwatching tours.
Hailing from a Karen hill tribe village, Somboon grew up speaking Karen as his first language. After finishing his village schooling, he made his way to Chiang Mai city in search of new opportunities. From pumping gas to serving in restaurants, and even donning the hat of a security guard and firefighter, Somboon’s early journey was all about learning and trying new things.
Between his various jobs, Somboon squeezed in night classes to learn to read and write in Thai. His determination then took him to Bangkok, where he took on different roles while chasing his goal of improving his English. After a year, he headed south to the scenic Rachaprapa Lake in Surat Thani Province.
Over two transformative years at a bungalow and bamboo raft house, he gradually sharpened his English, gaining confidence in communicating with travellers. Armed with this new skill, Somboon headed back to Chiang Mai, excited to be closer to his home village and ready to embark on a new adventure.
Embracing his role as a dedicated tour guide, Somboon expanded his expertise to include exciting Jeep 4×4 tours, thrilling motocross escapades, unforgettable trekking journeys, and captivating birdwatching experiences. Since 2004, his heart has been fully committed to sharing his birding passion and knowledge, introducing visitors to the colourful world of Thailand’s birdlife.
Looking ahead, Somboon’s dreams are clear. He envisions creating educational initiatives that protect local bird species and discourage harmful hunting practices. His ultimate goal is to inspire the next generation to appreciate and respect nature in all its forms.
